Vuyk designs a set of seafastenings for carrying multiple types of the largest turbines.

It is with pride that Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam recently received this beautiful image of the jack-up vessel Scylla in operation on its maiden project, Veja Mate, off the coast of Germany. Owned by Seajacks, it is the world’s largest offshore wind farm installation vessel. The image is a source of great pride at Vuyk, because, on behalf of Seajacks, Vuyk designed the vessel’s special set of supports and seafastenings suitable for carrying the largest turbines available from both Siemens as well as MHI Vestas.

Over the past 15 years, Vuyk has been active in the offshore wind market, and has developed extensive experience in complete load out, transport and installation engineering packages, as well as vessel and equipment design. As turbines and their foundations have continued to grow significantly, Vuyk’s in-house knowledge, skills and experience have also increased accordingly.

The supports and seafastenings required to transport the biggest turbine towers and blade racks are more complex than ever. Their current size and weight requires maximum utilisation of the available deck strength, while underdeck stiffening is to be avoided. This may be achieved with load spreading over larger deck areas but that requires space and steel weight, reducing the number of turbines that can be transported.

Vuyk’s in-house specialists in motion and structural FEM analyses, marine operations and vessel design, have fully optimised the support construction for the largest components. This has been undertaken in the most effective and efficient way possible, maximising the vessel’s potential and reducing seafastening costs.
