In much of the deck equipment hydraulic cylinders are used for machine movements. Hydraulic pressure is needed to move a cylinder. The amount of flow and pressure defines how much the cylinder will extent or retract and how fast. The PLC must control the amount of flow to control the cylinder. A typical setup is depicted below:
The PLC outputs 0-10 volts to the amplifier. The amplifier controls the valve which actual is a set of coils. By controlling the amount of current the amplifier controls the amount of flow.
There two main reasons to use an amplifier:
• The PLC usually cannot create enough current to control the valve.
• The relationship between the amount of current and the opening of the valve is not a simple linear function.
IHC is constantly looking to improve our products ( in quality and cost reduction). Although using an amplifier is a standard “way of working” we want to investigate the possibility of controlling the valve directly from the PLC. This has several advantages:
• Cost reduction. An amplifier costs €250 and there are many used in a machine
• Less space used in Control cabinet
• Less wiring to be done and tested
• Making software archive simpler. All parameters are stored in the PLC program instead of having a separate program for the amplifier.
To control the valve Siemens has an output card that can be used to create PWM ( pulsed width modulation). This card is capable of creating a current up to 2 amps. Enough for most of the valves used in the machine. Although the output voltage is 24 volts by creating a PWM signal the amount of current can be controlled.
Software must the following requirements:
• It must be capable of entering the needed characteristics of the valve and cylinder in to the software.
• Using these characteristics the software must create the correct PWM timing to control the cylinder.
• Position control software must be created using a position feedback signal from the cylinder. The higher level software can use this to give a “goto position X” to a cylinder.
Make a cost comparison between the existing solution an proposed solution.
- Together with an electrical and hydraulic engineer create a bench test environment ( PLC , HPU , power supply, cylinder etc.)
- Gain knowledge of how valves and cylinders work together. Which characteristics are involved and how they interact.
- Define the requirements for the software.
- Create a test document.
- Write a software program for a Siemens PLC.
- Carry out the described tests and archive the results
- Write a summary report and present this to the engineering department.

The Controls department is responsible for developing software needed to control the machines. The platform on which the software is developed is Siemens using the specific development environment from Siemens for PLC’s. The programming of the HMI is also responsibility of the Controls department.
Controls department has 9 PLC programmers and they work closely together with the Electrical department which develop the controls cabinets in which the PLC equipment is placed.
The PLC in the machine is connected to various sensors and actuators to control the machine.
