Your job

A systematic methodic approach is required for the role of maritime Proposal Manager (Electric). Your tasks will include the methodical gathering and analysis of the data of constructed vessels for use in cost estimation tools and new electrical concept designs. The key role of the Proposal Manager (Electric) will be to provide guidance on the most efficient electrical system design (based on a stakeholder’s requirements) to minimise any ‘unknowns’ in a new build vessel. In doing so, you will help to limit a project’s risks in the earliest stages.

Tasks and responsibilities
As Proposal Manager (Electric) of the IHC Holland BV business unit in The Netherlands, you will be responsible for the electrical design and cost estimations of the following product groups: power generation, power conversion, electrical power distribution and vessel automation. You will be part of the design team for concept standardisation of new vessels and cooperate with other Royal IHC business units to enable us to reach our goals. In addition, you will create optimised electrical designs based upon customers’ requirements, and be responsible for the continuous improvement and development of our estimation methods. Your main responsibilities will include the following:

  • gathering stakeholder requirements
  • carrying out electrical concept design studies and associated cost estimates
  • making trade-off studies between concepts
  • the recovery and analysis of project field data to enhance the cost estimation tools and new electrical concept designs
  • concept designs for new standard vessels
  • co-writing the electrical systems in the vessel’s specification
  • operating as part of a tender team of multidisciplinary cost engineers and proposal managers
Justification
For IHC an electrical product group breakdown is made to ensure a focus on continuous optimisation programmes. The main groups are: power generation, power conversion, electrical power distribution, vessel automation, mission equipment automation, and predictive and dynamic simulation. By incorporating the knowledge of other competence areas within shipbuilding, Royal IHC transcends the role of system integrator into system designer. As a system designer it has the opportunity to define the electrical concept, together with the customer. IHC acknowledges the importance of the tender stage in which the customers’ design requirements are translated into electrical concept designs. The performance and capabilities of each concept depend on the configuration. The electrical system configuration is a compromise between the stakeholders’ requirements in order to find an optimum balance for the overall vessel design. The degree to which the requirements can be fulfilled depends on the allocated capital costs and the agreed return on investment period. There are four main criteria areas: reliability, environment, employability and process efficiency. Within these areas, the stakeholder requirements can be defined. Depending on the selected customer needs, preferences and operational cycle, different energy solutions can be implemented to meet these expectations. Some design requirements are complementary, others are contradictive. For example, reduced fuel consumption is contradictive to an increased vessel speed, when both are selected with the same level of importance. The compromise here would be a customised design for reduced fuel consumption with the possibility of increased vessel speed for a shortened period. All these decisions, requirements and upcoming technologies are part of the world of the Proposal Manager and together these pieces form part of the entire complex 3D puzzle, which we call a vessel.

Your profile

You are motivated to continuously improve your electrical knowledge, and embrace the knowledge from other disciplines while maintaining a focus on stakeholder requirements. You support your colleagues and know how to motivate them and strive for new insights. In addition, you should have the following:

  • a higher vocational education (HBO) and/or an academic higher education (WO) in a technical or business discipline
  • analytical and creative skills (or you are willing to gain these by studying)
  • the ability to develop a strategy and share your vision with the customer and tender team
  • commercial and technical interests
  • a desire to motivate your colleagues to work with the latest business approach
  • good working knowledge of English and preferably Dutch
  • knowledge of cost estimation or the willingness to gain this competence
  • a creative, persuasive nature
  • passionate about continuously improving your knowledge level and insights
  • a willingness to travel between Sliedrecht, Krimpen and Kinderdijk on a regular basis, and to visit customers or attend meetings abroad.
