Health

Operating in a high-risk sector, Royal IHC clearly has a safety and health first mind-set. This is translated into daily practice, with support to management, supervisors and employees.

When it comes to the health of our people, Royal IHC goes that extra mile. We not only provide a healthy working environment – we are also committed to the overall health and wellbeing of our employees. We offer an extensive health programme, which includes the Royal IHC Fitness Health Centre, and we have a health manager at our employees’ disposal, who can offer preventive medical examinations and provide individual diet tips and sports programmes.

To us, offering mental health and wellbeing services is an important way to safeguard our people, create a safe workplace culture and set our business up for future success.

Developing resilience

Mental health issues are extremely common – in fact you may be surprised by some of the statistics. To help raise awareness and share tips on managing these problems as well as advice about where to seek further help, we have launched a mental health booklet which was issued to all staff and also train colleagues to become mental health advocates.

In addition, an employee assistance program was launched to connect employees with confidential, professional support, by telephone or face to face. Events such as Miss Menopause Sessions help educate managers on what female colleagues may go through and how to help and support them. And to top it off, special attention is given to stress awareness in the month of April with events, lunch lectures and excercise activities being hosted at our locations around the globe.

Staying connected while working remotely

In hybrid working conditions, we continue our emphasis on mental health and well-being with tool box talks, surveys, Ask Twice safety shares, check-in calls and we use our intranet to bring staff closer together by way of using working from home pictures, monthly staff quiz, celebrating achievements etc.

Results

Our dedication to the health and wellbeing of our people is not only beneficial to them – it motivates our employees and helps Royal IHC to achieve sustainable employability. The health programme has already resulted in:

  • a greater feeling of wellbeing for our employees
  • lower absenteeism percentages.

Furthermore, Royal IHC has been awarded a golden certificate from the International Institute for Health Management and Quality (IHMQ).

Safety

I-CARE

At Royal IHC, we take care of our people and are proud of our craftsmanship and values: commitment, partnership and innovation. Safety is an important part of our craftsmanship and reflected in our products and way of working.

Our goal is to ensure that everyone who works for us or who uses our products and services, can return home safely every day. To achieve this, within our I-CARE program we are working together to create an environment that is physically safe, socially safe and just. Physically safe through the provision of a safe working environment on all our sites. Socially safe through the creation of the right environment to have dialogues on safety dilemmas. Under the condition of a just culture: rewarding proactive behaviour and addressing undesired behaviour.

In 2020, we launched our company-wide safety programme under the banner of ‘I Create A Right Environment’ otherwise known as ‘I-CARE’.

With the I-CARE programme, we are building a proactive and learning organisation in which all employees take ownership and responsibility for safety. This is essential to achieve our ambitious goal of zero accidents together. The basis for this is support, awareness and leadership.

Royal IHC I-Care Safety Compass

I-CARE safety compass

Our I-CARE safety compass guides us the way to ensure everybody returns home safe every day.

A guidance document and training video are available at the reception of our premises to inform customers, new employees, contractors, subcontractors and visitors of our safety rules and emergency contact numbers.

We provide courses to increase safety awareness, and all employees – including our contractors and subcontractors – are expected to take the following values and rules to heart, and act accordingly.

Environment

It all starts with taking responsibility for the impact of our activities on the environment. We aim to annually reduce our carbon footprint by two per cent, and encourage the use of sustainable resources while focusing on increasing the sustainability of our facilities.

This includes energy saving measures, such as:

  • the replacement of diesel-powered forklifts with electric-powered forklifts
  • a transition from conventional to LED lighting
  • the recycling of salvaged materials
  • a reduction of packing materials.

Not only does Royal IHC consider taking such energy saving measures as its responsibility, it also propagates them through its Code of Conduct.

In addition to our efforts to reduce energy consumption, waste flows, consumption of materials and transport at our facilities, we are also committed to minimising the environmental impact of Royal IHC’s products and services.
