Operating in the Maldives requires more than standard dredging capability - it demands exceptional reliability, precision and support. With shallow lagoons, narrow work areas and sensitive coral reef environments, the Maldives Transport & Contracting Company (MTCC) works in one of the most challenging marine settings in the world. As the country’s leading civil and marine contractor, MTCC plays a vital role in delivering large-scale dredging and infrastructure projects across the island nation.

That is why MTCC partners with Royal IHC. Our proven engineering quality, very reliable vessels and strong lifecycle support ensure consistent performance with minimal downtime. From commissioning and training to technical assistance and optimised dredging solutions, we help MTCC maximise output while meeting strict environmental requirements.

Dredging in a unique and demanding operating environment

Dredging in the Maldives is shaped by a combination of shallow lagoons, narrow work areas and fragile coral reef ecosystems. These conditions demand precision, specialist equipment and continuous environmental awareness.

Key challenges MTCC faces:

  • extremely shallow and narrow working areas
  • hard, sharp and high-density seabed material leading to accelerated wear
  • monsoon cycles, swells and rough seas disrupting productivity
  • limited availability of suitable sand, requiring long-distance transport
  • strict EPA/EIA compliance to protect fragile coral ecosystems.

Why MTCC chose Royal IHC as their dredging partner

To support its growing project pipeline and expanding fleet, MTCC required dredging equipment capable of delivering consistent performance with minimal downtime. Royal IHC was chosen for its engineering quality, highly efficient dredging vessels with minimum downtime and proven ability to support customers operating in complex and remote environments.

Beyond technology, MTCC also valued the strength of our lifecycle support. Operating in the demanding marine conditions of the Maldives requires responsive assistance, readily available spare parts, and expert technical knowledge. Royal IHC provides comprehensive after-sales service, operator training, and ongoing technical support - ensuring MTCC can operate with confidence, continuity, and maximum productivity.

Collaboration focused on operational continuity

Royal IHC has worked closely with MTCC to ensure each dredger performs optimally from day one.

This cooperation includes:

  • commissioning and onboard optimisation
  • operator training to enhance productivity and safety
  • fine-tuning dredging settings for local soil conditions
  • support during dry-docking and technical maintenance
  • reliable spare parts supply and rapid troubleshooting.

MTCC: ‘ In particular, the Royal IHC UAE office has played a key role in ensuring smooth and efficient dredging operations for MTCC. From the beginning, they have been very engaged, providing operator trainings, guiding our team through commissioning and helping MTCC optimize production settings in Maldivian conditions. Their quick response and solutions have played a huge part especially in the recent growth in number of projects undertaken and increased fleet size.’

Project highlight: S. Hulhumeedhoo reclamation

One of the examples of the partnership’s impact is the S. Hulhumeedhoo project. MTCC encountered an extremely hard seabed section - 60 by 100 metres - which could not be dredged using standard Multi Purpose cutter heads. Royal IHC provided a dedicated solution: the Light Duty Rock cutter head, engineered for dense and abrasive material.

This upgrade enabled MTCC to complete a project previously considered unachievable, demonstrating the value of robust technology and specialist engineering support.

Looking ahead

As MTCC continues to expand its fleet and project scope, it sees strong opportunities to deepen its collaboration with Royal IHC. This includes acquiring new vessels, strengthening maintenance support, expanding spare parts programmes, and offering additional operator training.

The partnership is built on reliability, innovation and shared commitment - enabling MTCC to continue delivering critical infrastructure across the Maldives.
